In response to the German practice of unrestricted submarine warfare, sabotage within the borders of our country and attempts to influence Mexico to attack us on our southern border President Woodrow Wilson declared WAR on April 6, 1917.
The National Guard was called to duty and Virginians organized with the Guard units from Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey to form the 29th Blue-Gray Division.
The 116th Infantry was formed from various units of the Virginia Guard.
Men from Fredericksburg, who had served in Co. K, 2nd VA National Guard, were used to form Co. K, of the 116th Infantry.
