Many of these Virginians were the sons and grandsons of men who served with the gray legions
that once fought in the streets of Fredericsksburg Virginia during the “late War of Northern Aggression”
as it was often called by local residents.
In two short years after the declaration of War Germany and her allies Citizens of Fredericksburg
would see service in some of the deadliest fighting in the man made Hell of the Western Front.
Those that returned would run the City for the next several decades some would make the ultimate
sacrifice and sleep forever in the battlefields of France. Still others would return, crippled by
wounds, gas and disease their lives cut short on the alter of freedom.
